The Royal Artillery Barracks Olympic Shooting Range was one of the standout arenas created for the London Olympic Games. Located in a traditional setting, this facility caught the imagination of competitors, spectators, and the public, and it demonstrated the power of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in project design, manufacture, construction, and disassembly. There was a focus on workflow to empower disparate parties to embrace real collaboration. The use of technology was essential to achieving high-quality design. We created a 3D structural model of each building, which then became a hub for coordination with temporary frame contractors, manufacturers, and other designers. In this class, we illustrate the workflow used to take the generative models built using Rhinoceros® software into Robot™ Structural Analysis and Oasys GSA to perform structural design and then into Revit® Structure software using the Geometry Gym BIM plug-in.

Leeds Station Southern Entrance (LSSE) is a signature new gateway entrance to the existing station in Leeds, United Kingdom. Constructed over the existing river between 2 residential tower blocks, and supported from the existing station structure and Victorian masonry arched viaduct, the site constraints alone make this a challenging scheme. When combined with the multiple curves of the architectural form, it presents a unique set of engineering challenges. This class will be a case study covering how we’ve successfully used multiple Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools (including Rhino software, Grasshopper software, Robot Structural Analysis software, Revit software, and Navisworks software) to engineer a scheme that would be impossible without today's technology and to bring the existing and new build elements together seamlessly. We will discuss the project constraints, the workflows used, and some of the challenges we overcame in design and construction.

In August 2015, Arkansas Children's, Inc. announced plans to build a freestanding children's hospital in Springdale, Arkansas. The new building, Arkansas Children's Northwest, will include 235,000 square feet of inpatient beds, emergency care, diagnostic services and clinical space. The hospital's construction and facilities team assembled a detailed set of data specifications to streamline the handover of the building and jumpstart operations & maintenance. The goal was to have all equipment data populated in the CMMS (maintenance management system) by substantial completion in the fall of 2017, to allow for critical maintenance processes to be in place prior to completion. To realize that vision, TME led an initiative to drive the successful transition and handover of asset data before the end of the project. This presentation walks through the planning, design, and construction phases of the project as well as the beginning of operations.

Mark has 21 years of construction and engineering design experience. He has played a key role in the implementation of Autodesk BIM tools at Bernhard TME.Mark has shared his BIM knowledge at events such as Autodesk University, BIM Forum, ASHE, AHA, ASHRAE, FIATECH and numerous Revit User Groups.Mark got his start in the industry as a fire sprinkler designer. Mark has been leading the BIM Services Group at Bernhard TME. This group focuses on project delivery for the building lifecycle. Mark is also an adjunct Professor at Arizona State University and was involved with the development of the VLC Collaboration Space at Arizona State University and lectures on the subject of Building Startup and Commissioning using BIM tools.

MWH are a global engineering and construction management company who build some of the world’s largest wastewater treatment plants. MWH in conjunction with Autodesk Consulting have implemented an innovative method to embed the construction Inspection Test Plan (ITP) inside BIM 360 Field. This method makes ITP completion intuitive for the site manager and enables the off-site quality management team and project manager to monitor its progress. Zoe Robertson from MWH and Anthony Neal from Autodesk Consulting will demonstrate how an ITP that has been documented in MS Excel can be generated into Autodesk BIM 360 Field clearly showing the building elements that require inspection and what quality inspections need to be conducted. We will also demonstrate how the ITP process can be further streamlined by embedding it in the BIM model during design. We will also discuss the people aspects that need to be understood and considered when driving QA/QC completion on-site.

In order to create an analytical representation of a structural model ready for analysis, there are some transformation, changes, and assumptions that need to be applied. In Revit software, the analytical model is created automatically as the physical model is built. Some structural configurations are not suitable for direct integration with analysis and design software. Adaptive adjustment is required. This could be tedious and time consuming. In this class, you’ll learn how to take full advantage of the analytical representation features in Revit, and how to integrate the structural analysis in the Building Information Modeling (BIM) models.

This class will present reflections and guidelines on teaching Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology based on Autodesk® Revit® software at the postgraduate university level. It is based on my experiences in creating and running 3 courses for the Master Program at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Hong Kong. All the courses use Revit as a tool, but explore quite different functionalities and produce different results in the area of form design, parametric building components, and project documentation. The class will discuss how to use technology as a means to solve real design tasks and challenges. The general context of current challenges and opportunities for BIM development in the Hong Kong design and building industry will be presented as a background for the class.

Using Revit software, plumbing engineers and designers are able to capitalize on Building Information Modeling (BIM) data and 3D views to more effectively communicate design intent, while at the same time reducing overall production hours on projects. This class will walk through methodologies and concepts, such as the tagging of BIM components, when it is viable to use an isometric versus an enlarged plan, filters to display specific piping systems, and visibility graphics related to plumbing families and links. These simple ideas can add up to tremendous savings in coordination issues and project hours spent trying to communicate the design. We will cover the concepts that can make that possible for you.

How is your industrial organization utilizing the latest Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools to design, fabricate, coordinate, and construct in a client-friendly, cost-effective manner? In this round table we will discuss BIM and its use in industrial engineering and construction. We will dive into tools, techniques, and workflows that offer a satisfying return on investment, and we'll explore the different ways that participants in the 3D world are executing projects. Discussions will center on Plant Design Suite, Navisworks project review software, and BIM 360 software.

This class covers the use of several software products, including Revit® Structure and Robot™ Structural Analysis Professional, for applications in the offshore energy and marine industry rather than the traditional building industry. These structures are often steel dominated and usually require advanced finite element method (FEM) analysis. We show examples from relevant projects and explain the workflow between the different software products used in the projects. We also show how the Robot API (application programing interface) can be useful for improved workflow between various analysis and modeling tools for complete detail engineering. You should be familiar with Robot, or another similar FEM analysis tool, and be open to API programming.

In this session, a customer will share the problems and productivity challenges faced when designing steel to concrete (S2C) connections. Hilti and IDEA StatiCa will show how to overcome these challenges in the future, and discuss where they stand in this exciting journey. Problem 1: methods and tools for design. You will discover background information on the ACI 318 requirement of a rigid base plate (and how to judge), and hear about AISC DG1, as well as the innovative component-based finite element model (CBFEM) method to solve this problem in a holistic way covering all design proofs also for complex connections. Problem 2: workflow integration. You will see workflows from Robot Structural Analysis software via Hilti PROFIS Engineering into Revit software, and will also learn about further plans (RISA Connection, SAP2000, and so on). From punch-listing to logging safety observations, many of today’s methods for collecting and managing that data fall short of optimum effectiveness and efficiency. We will expose you to new mobile technology that will change your way of thinking about how this data can be collected and used. You will gain an understanding of why customizing and optimizing this process is so important, as well as how the data can be imported into a Building Information Modeling (BIM) environment for use in trend analysis.

This class is intended for structural engineers/technicians and contractors who struggle with the on-time delivery of accurate structural analysis results. It's a daily challenge for structural engineers to make the right decisions on structural geometry based on limited project data. Being competitive in structural design means early delivery of building construction documentation. In this session you will learn how to perform early-stage analysis on your structural models in Revit in order to define the right foundation design. You will discover how to detect structural problems in your predesign stage of your Building Information Modeling (BIM) process using cloud analysis in Revit with the Structural Analysis toolkit. The class will focus on interoperability between analysis software and Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools, with a focus on Revit building design software as the primary documentation model. Making the most of parametric modeling tools—such as Dynamo software, Rhino software, and Grasshopper software—and optimization techniques using a wide range of tools, "Open BIM" can provide the foundation to successful collaboration. We will use real-world examples of complex and simple structures to demonstrate techniques and processes that will increase your efficiency and make the most of your team’s skill set, and examine what future skills your team might need to develop. This class presents a case study of the design of the new Casement Park stadium in West Belfast, Ireland. Located on a tight site, this new Gaelic Athletics site posed numerous design challenges. We explore the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) throughout the MEP and structural design of this project, with particular focus on how the integrated design team used the entire Building Design Suite to benefit all parties. The engineering models were linked to Vico Office for 5D and to Navisworks® for the 4D construction planning. Structural analysis was assisted by links to Robot™ Structural Analysis, and the model was used for lighting analysis and people flow modeling. These workflows facilitated a more efficient design process for all parties. This class also looks at anticipated future directions for workflows that will improve the design process.
