The emergence of consumer-level 3D printers and their use for fabrication of practical objects (instead of prototypes) makes it important to understand their design rules and the physical properties of their output. In this class, we spend some time understanding exactly how these printers work, with a particular emphasis on how a 3D design intent is translated into actual toolpaths. Based on this understanding, you will be able to understand how to manage particular issues that affect printability and strength of parts, such as overhangs, bridges, wall thickness, filament orientation, and more. The class is illustrated with extensive example projects that are in active use in the 3D printing community. In this class, the speaker will share the Fusion 360 free-form modeling tips and tricks that were used to model the Ironman Suit and the Ironman Armor: Mark XLIV—HulkBuster. Fusion 360 software is a complete product-design tool that enables users to go from concept to production with integrated CAD, CAM, and CAE technology. We hear that a lot, but in reality, what does it actually mean? Is it the Swiss Army knife of design software? Can it do everything? This class will take attendees through the complete design and manufacturing process, from initial concept scribbles all the way through to generating files for 3D printing and toolpaths for a computer numerical control (CNC) job. We'll kick off with bringing some drawings into the Fusion 360 environment and using them as template. Then we will move on to some basic simulations, carrying out a design change and generating some communication visuals with custom materials. Finally, we'll hit up the Manufacture workspace to generate some toolpaths for CNC machining and potentially fire up a CNC machine (using Fusion Team to share tool libraries).

In this workshop, you’ll learn how to create a shoe from scratch in Fusion 360 software. Starting with a 3D scan created using ReCap Pro software as a template, the workshop will show you how to insert an STereoLithography (STL) or Mesh into Fusion 360, utilizing the Mesh Environment. To achieve the perfect design, the tutorial will elaborate on the optimum methods of inserts sketches or guides to reference when modeling. Starting from a 2D sketch, the workshop will let users create and modify T-spline bodies to produce the basic form of a shoe design around the 3D scan. Finally, in the Patch workspace, you’ll begin to learn how to add key design features using surface modeling. You’ll learn how to add key features to the design, such as the midsole, and convert surfaces into BREP bodies ready for 3D printing. We’ll provide all the tools you’ll need to begin creating footwear designs in Fusion 360.
